T. C. Jones
(1920 - 1971)
Until Dame Edna Everage hit these shores, female impersonation was a minority pleasure, limited largely to gay clubs and the occasional Rotary Club show. One man made it pretty far into the center ring, though: the late T.C. Jones. A decade of chorus work in New York; The Provincetown Playhouse (where he first found his metier, drag); then nightclubs, where he was spotted by Leonard Sillman. The producer put T.C. into New Faces of 1956. Finally, he was made. He even hit "The Ed Sullivan Show" -- three times! -- and one memorably macabre installment of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents."
